Today we are stepping into the new Jewish year of 5781. We decided to deviate somewhat from our traditional greetings and wish first and foremost you and your loved ones good health.

The past year was very difficult for Israel and for the whole world. The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress has always seen its duty in providing assistance to communities, specially in such circumstances. In the course of the past year, we supported several projects that were on the verge of closure, for we believe mutual assistance to be the most important principle of our work.

Next year, the EAJC will continue to work in all major areas: countering anti-Semitism, preserving the historical memory of the Jewish people, developing Jewish national culture, community building, and supporting the Israeli state’s interests. We will also continue to provide support to Jewish communities in the Euro-Asian region affected by the pandemic.

This past year was full of important and serious work under very tough conditions. However, we continued to do everything possible to ensure the prosperity of our communities and our people.

A lot has been done, and even more needs to be done in the upcoming year. We wish you a good and sweet, and most importantly, a healthy New Year!

Traditionally, the Lag b’Omer night in Israel is lit up by numerous bonfires. However, this time the bonfires are forbidden, and the holiday festival on Mount Meron will also be much more modest.

As the anniversary of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai’s death, each year Lag B’Omer attracts upwards of a quarter of a million people who come to Mount Meron to visit his tomb.

In 2020, due to the special circumstances, Israeli authorities allowed only three bonfires to be lit on Mount Meron. No more than 50 people equipped with a special pass will be able to participate in each ceremony.

All this is done in order to avoid crowding and quickly lead the country out of the pandemic crisis.

Stay healthy, dear friends! Happy Lag b’Omer!

In Israel, Victory Day on 9 May has historically been celebrated as an unofficial national remembrance day. Since 2017, Victory Day has been a national holiday of Israel.

Today, we honor the Jewish heroes who have sacrificed their lives for our future.

In 1897, right after the First Zionist Congress, Theodor Herzl put down what is the most prophetic entry of his, if not of any, diary:

“At Basel, I founded the Jewish State. If I said this out loud today, l would be greeted by universal laughter. In five years perhaps, and certainly, in fifty years, everyone will perceive it.”

Exactly 50 years later – in 1947 – the UN adopted the resolution on the establishment of an independent Jewish state.

Now, 72 years after the Declaration, Israel is one of the world leading states!

Happy Independence Day!

In the 1930s, Western countries, struggling with the global economic crisis, closed their doors on German and Austrian Jews who were persecuted by the Nazis.

At the same time, the Philippines did everything possible to rescue Jews. It is also the only Asian country to support the UN resolution on the establishment of the State of Israel.

While the Philippines’ diverse Jewry has considerably reduced over the years, it remains a vibrant and welcoming Jewish community.

In 1983, the Beth Yaacov synagogue was erected in downtown Makati, and the Jewish Association of the Philippines produces a monthly newsletter.

In 2020, the Jewish community of the Philippines joined the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress.
